It took lots of research, digging, some begging and pleading, and even a trip to Japan to bring these Lisianthus to America! If you have been paying attention to the world of imported cut flowers, you will know that the Japanese grow the finest cut Lisianthus in the world. That's partly culture, and partly the genetics of the varieties they select. These are the exact varieties that are used in Japan to produce those premium export flowers.
In 2019 I had the pleasure of visiting the cut Lisianthus trials of 5 breeders in Japan. We already have working relationships with the expert breeders at Sakata (Voyage, Rosita, Rosanne and more) and Takii (Corelli, Arena, Croma and more) but Sumika has not had an American outlet until now. The Sumika range offers refined beauty and a range of new designer colors to the world of lisianthus Lisianthus. I expect some of these will come new favorites with American growers.
We have been lacking a good, ruffled, large-flowered lavender Lisianthus up until now, and now we have 3! I have also selected some two-tone varieties where the center of the flower is slightly paler that the outer petals. It's a subtle difference, but your florist customers will notice. There are also some new complex "in between" tones we have not seen before that are perfect for earthy antique color pallettes.
All of these varieties can reach 3' or more when happy. In general the smaller flowered types have more flowers per stem than the larger flowered types, but they are very floriferous.
As these are brand new, I welcome your feedback on these varieties and I will really this information to the kind folks at Sumika. I have grown a couple of these in a trial capacity, but many of these colors will be new to me in 2021. I'm excited
Celeb- Large to Very Large flowers. Very double fringed flowers. This series dominates the Japanese lisianthus market, and many of the cut flowers we see imported from Japan are Celeb types. It is less stress tolerant to less than ideal conditions, so may not be best for first time growers. (if you succeed with Voyage and Corelli, this series should do well for you)
Megalo- Large flowers with good waviness to the petal. Holds up to high heat
Arosa- Medium sized flowers with a distinctive rounded rose shape. The red is a deep scarlet magenta, and the violet is a rich saturated purple.
Espirit- Medium size double flowers with open centers
Little Summer- Small to medium sized flowers, double, with open centers. Rugged waxy petals that do well in high heat. Unique designer colors.
Grace- Large pale lavender. Listed as group 1, but tends towards group 2.
Sabrina- The closest we have seen to orange. Mango and Orange are quite similar. They are more of a true apricot color.
