In warmer regions, most of these varieties will actively grow all winter for extra-early blooms. In colder zones, the plugs will establish for a few weeks before winter and will likely grow minimally over winter, taking the opportunity to grow on sunny, mild days. While you might not see much above ground, their roots are developing below the surface. Fall-planted cool season annuals almost always outperform their spring planted counterparts in both size and productivity. In zones colder than USDA 6, it’s recommended to grow under cover for the best, most reliable results. Some varieties within the mixes are foolproof and can easily withstand bitterly cold winters, while others prefer a little more protection.
