Common Name Anise Hyssop, Giant Hyssop, Hummingbird Mint, Agastache (Blue Boa, Morello)
Genus  Agastache
Species Hybrids
Family Lamiaceae
Life Cycle  Herbaceous Perennial. Some species/varieties are hardier than others - some are grown as long-lived perennials, others are grown as a short-lived perennial pr even annual in colder zones. Be sure to research the specific species or variety you are interested in.
Format 36-cell half tray
Plug Care Harden off and plant plugs promptly upon arrival. Keep the growing media evenly moist but not soggy until you can get the plugs in the ground. Plant at the same depth that the plants are growing in the plug trays - do not plant deeply.
Netting / Staking Generally not required - both 'Blue Boa' and 'Morello' are upright in habit. If stems become extremely tall and top-heavy with flowers (especially under very fertile or moist conditions), a single layer of netting can be used for support.
Temperature Range Generally hardy in USDA Zones 5 to 10 (depending on variety and winter protection).
Spacing 20-24 inch spacing will accommodate mature plant size and will allow for adequate airflow between plants.
Soil Preference Prefers well-drained soils with moderate fertility (leaner soils preferred over rich), good aeration, and neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid heavy clay or soils that stay wet. Most average soils will work well.
Day Length long-day plants. Long days benefit overall vigor and flowering.
Pinching A single pinch at transplant can be beneficial to promote early branching and more flowers. After flowering begins, deadheading spent flower spikes will encourage further bloom.
When to Plant Plant in the spring when the soil has warmed and after the threat of a late frost has passed, all the way through to mid-summer. Give the plants at least 6-8 weeks to establish before first frost if planting in the fall.
Harvesting Harvest flower spikes when florets have started to open but are not fully past peak - cutting at “just open” stage allows the flowers to continue opening post harvest and extends vase life.
Harvest early in the morning or later in the evening when the plants are at peak hydration. A trick is to use the “wiggle test” - stems that resist bending/drooping are typically mature enough to cut.
Post Harvest Care Cut stems should immediately be placed in a bucket with cool, fresh water - the use of a floral preservative has been shown to maximize vase life. Remove all leaves and side shoots that will sit below the vase line and hydrate in a cooler for best results. If hydration is proving difficult, an application of Quick Dip might help. Avoid ethylene exposure.
Diseases / Insects These plants are typically very hardy and easy going if given the proper conditions. Root diseases and crown rot due to poorly draining soils can be problematic, especially in the winter. Watch for rust, powdery mildew and bacterial leaf spot during periods of high humidity and if the vegetation is wet for prolonged period. Pest insects typically leave these plants alone but watch for aphids, thrips or spider mites during periods of stress.
Bailey's Notes

We’re pleased to have two incredible varieties of agastache - 'Blue Boa' and 'Morello' from the talented breeders at Terra Nova in our lineup. These are robust, high-performance hybrids that bring lasting color and fragrance to your cutting garden.

'Blue Boa' features deep violet-blue spires on stiff, upright stems, with great cold tolerance and long bloom from mid to late summer.

'Morello' offers rich burgundy-rose flower clusters and a strong upright habit, making it a dramatic accent or filler in arrangements.

These varieties are more forgiving than older seedling agastaches - they require less constant pinching, and their fuller flower heads mean more usable stems per plant. Be cautious with fertility and moisture: overly rich or wet soils tend to produce floppiness or reduce winter survivability.
