Happy St. Paddy's Day to all who celebrate! Many of you are receiving your Moluccella laevis 'Bells of Ireland' plug trays right now. Grown for their lush green spikes covered in verdant shell-shaped blossoms, this variety represents luck in flower-speak.
Bells can be tricky to germinate, so it's worth it to leave it to the experts. Plant your plugs the moment they arrive. These are easily root bound, so get them out of their tray right away. You may notice that your plugs have two seedlings in each cell upon arrival. They can stay with their friend in the plug! If there are more than two or three seedlings in the cell, decapitate the weakest ones leaving the roots undisturbed.
Good luck with your planting this week, and as always, send any questions along to us at info@farmerbailey.com.
Deep gratitude to Melissa Fischbach of Wild Hollow Farm for this sublime Bells of Ireland photo!
