Eryngium (32)
New from our friends at Kolster!
We all know and love seed grown Eryngium, but there is so much more to the story! You may have seen larger flowered Eryngium imported from overseas. These varieties have larger flowers and sturdier stems. They just haven't been available to us until now! These are propagated through tissue culture to ensure that every plant is exactly the same.
These varieties have also been selected for their vigor and high production. You will probably get a marketable harvest in year 1, but expect even bigger yields in year 2 and onward. Eryngium is very drought tolerant once established, but production will be better if grown with ample moisture on well drained soils.
Blue and White Lagoon are similar in size, shape and production. Purple star makes unique clusters of small flowers.
We are working on bringing you several more Magical Eryngium from Kolster in the next year!
Eryngium is available weeks 9-16 only
Price includes $ .55 royalty per plant.

Please note that vernalized perennial orders must be placed separately from other plug orders. The minimum order is two trays, which may be mixed and matched with all other perennials in this collection. Learn more about our perennial program here.
About Tray Sizes (please read)
210 and 125 cell trays are full-sized trays, and three of these will fit in a shipping box.
50 cell trays are half-sized trays (unless otherwise noted) and two of these are the equivalent of one full sized tray. Six of these will fit in a shipping box. These trays are long and skinny. (Think hotdogs). There are not compatible with 25 cell half trays. Scoop scabiosa, veronica, solidago, gypsophila, hypericum, herbs, some tweedia, and others are grown in the 50 cell tray.
*Chrysanthemums are grown in the same 50 cell half tray as mentioned above, but due to their height, they take up twice as much space. So TWO half trays of mums takes up 2/3 of the box.
25 cell half trays are also half-sized trays, but they are short and square. (Think hamburgers). These are not compatible with 50 cell half trays. Limonium and astrantia are grown in this tray.
Gerberas are also grown in a 25 cell half tray, but are tall that the others, and FOUR of these half trays of gerberas fills a box.
18 and 32 cell trays are full sized trays specifically for our vernalized perennials. These have their own set of shipping rules (find details HERE) and cannot be combined with items grown in 210, 125, or 50 cell trays.

| Common Name | Eryngium, Sea Holly |
| Genus | Eryngium |
| Species | Multiple (Glitter series are E. planum) |
| Family | Apiaceae |
| Life Cycle | Herbaceous Perennial |
| Format | Plugs |
| Plug Care | Harden off and plant out or bump up into larger cells soon after receiving plugs to avoid them becoming stressed or rootbound. |
| Netting / Staking | Not necessary. |
| Temperature Range | Hardiness zones 3-8. Grow best at temperatures between 60-70F and struggle with extreme heat. |
| Spacing | 18-24" - Plants will slowly grow larger with each passing season but rarely need to be divided. |
| Soil Preference | Well draining soil is essential, eryngium is sensitive to overwatering. After establishing in their new bed they are quite drought tolerant and can withstand sandy, even salty conditions along a coast. |
| Day Length | Long-day plant. Plant in full sun. |
| Pinching | Do not pinch. |
| When to Plant | Plant plugs in spring, after threat of frost has passed. Can be planted later in the season but you won't see flowers until the following year. |
| Harvesting | Excellent for fresh or dry use. Cut entire stem down to the base of the plant when the flowers and bracts turn blue or white (depending on cultivar). Cut stems should immediately placed in cool water. |
| Post Harvest Care | Hang upside-down to air dry (Use a desiccant to preserve the intense blue coloration) or use fresh - expect a vase life of 7-10 days and use a floral preservative to maximize vase life. Can be stored in a cooler at 40F which has been reported to intensify the color. |
| Diseases / Insects | Eryngium is fairly resistant of most pests and diseases, but like most plants can be attacked by aphids. Root rot is a leading issue in poorly drained soils. |
| Bailey's Notes | Both Blue Glitter and White Glitter will flower first year if planted early in the season, but don't expect much of a show year one. Each year the plants will get progressively larger and produce more stems for cutting. |
