WATCH: Preparing for Winter

Winter is coming. Taking a few steps to prepare your fall-planted crops for frosty weather means you'll be snuggling with a seed catalog instead of stressing a cold snap come January.

In this episode of It's Five O'Clock Somewhere with Farmer Bailey, Bailey advises building a "cold snap kit" with row cover, sandbags, leaves or mulch, and twinkly lights!  Old-school incandescent lightbulbs run through the rows can help plants survive subzero temperatures–if you are prepared to deploy them.

Watch the recording for more tips on overwintering plants, plus a gadget that can ease your mind when away from your farm.

Autumn's mood holds the joy of harvest, and the weary anticipation of a season of rest. As you put your garden to bed, take a few steps to prepare your fall-planted plugs for their cold winter nap and a bright spring bloom.

We are gathering to share our best practices for preparing for winter, this Wednesday, October 25 at 9am PT/Noon ET/5pm GMT on Instagram Live. Visit the Farmer Bailey Plugs Instagram page and tap on our profile photo to join in the Live conversation, and pose your questions about winter prep to Bailey and your fellow flower farmers.

Join Bailey as he discusses:

  • what plants actually do over winter
  • normal or expected conditions vs. what will throw plants off-course
  • supplies to have on hand to combat unexpected cold snaps
  • mental health, relaxation, and the importance of downtime
  • using winter for education

A recording of the video chat and Q&A will be posted to the Farmer Bailey Blog and YouTube Channel shortly after the Live broadcast.  You can watch every episode of It's Five O'Clock Somewhere with Farmer Bailey anytime on YouTube.

Has Frostmas come to your farm yet? Tell us all about your winter plans, and add your questions below in Comments.  If you prefer to ask or share anonymously, email info@farmerbailey.com.  See you Wednesday!
