Common Name Peach-leaved bellflower
Genus  Campanula
Species Campanula persicifolia
Family Campanulaceae
Life Cycle  Perennial
Format 32-cell plug tray
Plug Care Harden off and transplant plugs immediately upon arrival. Plant at the same level as it was growing in the plug trays, firm soil gently around plugs and water thoroughly. Maintain even moisture until established.
Netting / Staking Staking or netting is typically unnecessary unless in exposed or windy sites. These stems are quite wiry and are normally able to support themselves.
Temperature Range Hardy in USDA Zones 3-8. Prefers cool to moderate climates but is rather easy going.
Spacing Space plugs 12-18 inches apart to allow mature growth and good air circulation.
Soil Preference Prefers well-drained, moderate to fertile soil with consistent moisture. Fairly drought tolerant once mature, but will always perform better with adequate irrigation.
Day Length Long-day flowering plant. Full sun to partial shade; flowering best with at least 6 hours of sun.
Pinching Not necessary; harvesting and deadheading encourages a prolonged blooming window.
When to Plant Transplant plugs in spring after danger of frost has passed, or in early fall - allow for a 6 week establishment period before the first hard frost.
Harvesting Expect flowers in late spring, early summer. Cut flower stems when the very first blooms are open and some buds remain on the stem to continue opening in the vase. Cut stems should immediately be placed into cool water and kept in a dark cool area (like a cooler) to hydrate before use.
Post Harvest Care Expect a vase life of between one and two weeks - the use of a floral conditioner may maximize vase life.
Diseases / Insects These plants are typically very hardy and pest and disease resistant. Watch for the typical plant pests like aphids, thrips and powdery mildew later in the season.
Bailey's Notes This is a true perennial alternative to our annual/biennial Champion campanula selections.
