Common Name Rodger's Flower, Rodgersia
Genus  Rodgersia
Species Rodgersia pinnata (hybrid selection)
Family Saxifragaceae
Life Cycle  Herbaceous Perennial
Format 36-cell half tray
Plug Care Harden off and plant plugs promptly after arrival. Maintain moist but not overly saturated growing medium until you can get them planted out, and continue to water frequently while roots establish. Avoid letting the plugs dry out completely. Plant at the same level as the plugs were growing in the trays - do not plant deeply.
Netting / Staking Not required; the foliage and flowering stems are self-supporting and robust.
Temperature Range Hardy in USDA Zones 5 to 8
Spacing Space plants about 24 to 30 inches apart to allow for their mature size.
Soil Preference Prefers humus-rich, consistently moist, well-drained soils. Can handle soils on the wetter side but not saturated or boggy. Fertilize for best results, but avoid fertilizers with high nitrogen as that can encourage floppy, soft growth. Amending the planting soil with a generous amount of organic matter such as compost is a great way to promote healthy growth.
Day Length Long-day plants: flowers during the long days of June. Plant in part shade to shade.
Pinching Do not pinch.
When to Plant Plant in late spring to early summer, when the soil has warmed and the threat of a late frost has passed.
Harvesting This plant has typically been grown as a garden plant and needs to be experimented with as a cut flower. Apparently the stems and leaves can last in the vase, but more experimentation is needed. Foliage will likely last in a vase once it has matured and toughened.
Post Harvest Care N/A
Diseases / Insects Rodgersia generally has no serious insect or disease problems to note. The major challenge is drought stress: this species resents drought and prefers consistent moisture.
Bailey's Notes Rodgersia ‘Bronze Peacock’ is a dramatic foliage plant whose bold leaves add a lot of interest to shady or woodland gardens. We wanted to add it to our lineup as it's a horticulturally charismatic plant for the garden, and with some trial and error, it could make a great cut flower/foliage as well.
